Denim is in. It’s always been “in” but this fall season of 2016 has made me realize that a good denim jacket can turn your regular outfit, into a cool outfit (more cool than Regina George’s mom).
My favorite denim jacket trend is the 90’s-inspired patched jacket. I’ve been dying to make my own for a few months and I got the perfect opportunity to create one over the weekend to go with my outfit for Posh & Popular’s 2016 Fashion and Beauty Summit. I stressed about this outfit the entire night before the event but I really wanted to show my personal style and “craft skills”.
The jacket is from Forever 21 (sorry, not online guys!) but you can find a denim jacket, almost anywhere — including thrift stores for a low price. This one retailed for about $23. It was already distressed and ripped but that’s also a fun DIY project to try at home.
Now on to the fun stuff! Patches. I got many of the patches, including the varsity style letters “GGGF”, from Michaels craft store. Of course I had to represent my brand on the custom made jacket. These varsity letters were only about $1.59 each!
Also on the back of the jacket, there is a super-cute patch of an eyelash box that reads “super thick,” which of course was a perfect addition for my love of makeup. This patch was bought online from Sugarbones Art & Design, which is a site by Cheyenne Federiconi, a Canadian Artist. She has tons of cute, girly and fun patches and pins that would look great on any DIY piece you’re creating.
Believe or not, H&M also has patches! For only $7.99 you can get a 6-pack of iron-on patches. The pink popsicle and silver unicorn are also featured on the back of the jacket! On the front of my original piece, I used more patches from Michael’s craft store, including the gold stars, lady bugs, cupcakes and yellow smiley face. The fun part about creating a patched jacket or any patches item is that you can be fun and include so many different pieces.
I also used the “snap queen” patch from the H&M pack on the front of my jacket so it would conveniently fit into snap selfie.
Patches are fun but I also found a pin, on Etsy that fit me so well! This “Eyebrow Game Strong” pin from SarcasticSister on Etsy was only $2.50. Realistically I should have bought more to add to all of my outfits. It’s so fierce.
In preparing for the Posh & Popular’s 2016 Fashion and Beauty Summit, I realized that I do have a personal style. I never considered myself “stylish” because I would always see these beautifully dressed women and think I wish I dressed like that. But that’s not me. I like to dress up high-waisted jeans, wear bodycon dresses and mix patterns often because I see myself as “casual glam.” I stressed about wanting to look great at the event to fit in but arriving in my jacket and all black, made me the most comfortable and happy. It’s crazy how a DIY style project can help you relieve stress and find yourself and sense of style.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this jacket. I am in love with patches. And have several now that I am actually thinking about putting on some jeans.
