When I turned 18, I got my first tattoo on my right rib cage. It reads “Perfectly Imperfect,” a message to myself that I am indeed perfect the way I was created. I battled with my self-esteem throughout high school and it wasn’t until late in my junior year that I was finally becoming comfortable with being me. I tried to fit in with the crowd and there were times I hated who I was. With a lot of reflection and self admiration, I learned to love Simone for who she is. That tattoo serves as a reminder to myself that I will never be perfect but I am always more than good enough.
Fast forward to years later, I am battling with another personal issue of not feeling “good enough.” This time it’s with my career and success. When you graduate college, you’re kind of set up to believe that you’ll be working in your career field immediately and making more money. But before I begin to blame the system, I had to do more self reflection and see where I could have improved to be where I wanted to be. So in August, I got a new tattoo on my wrist of a key. So many times, I was asked, “Who has the lock?” No one. It’s not a matching tattoo with a friend or my boyfriend. Instead this tattoo is my personal reminder that, I hold the keys to my future and my success. My career and personal goals are obtainable, if I work for them. I can’t compare myself to others because their keys to success open different doors. Everyone’s path is different.
Of the two tattoos, the wrist is my favorite. I can see it all day, everyday. It’s also like having a permanent arm/wrist accessory Whenever I’m feeling uninspired, lazy and or unaccomplished, this tattoo is a boost for me to get off of my ass and work to open that door to my next steps in life.
Tattoos are one of the most beautiful and creative forms of self expression. These small but powerful pieces have helped me overcome personal battles and also adds edginess to my look.
